In Seattle's biggest sports announcement in years, Seattle will get a professional women's hockey team in 2025.

The Professional Women's Hockey League announced Wednesday morning that the team will be added in time for next season, which starts in the fall.

It's major news for the nascent league, only in it's second season. Seattle will be one of its first West Coast teams and the eighth in the league. Vancouver, B.C., was announced last week as the league's seventh team.

"Seattle emerged as a natural fit for PWHL expansion for several reasons, including its best-in-class facilities, a growing youth hockey community, and passionate women’s sports fanbase," the league's announcement says.

Hockey fans have campaigned for at least five years for a women's league to come to Seattle.

The team will play at Climate Pledge Arena and its colors will be Emerald green and cream. The team's name will be decided at a later date.
